Fundraising is a key part of organizational sustainability. Organizations interested in incorporating donations into their ControlShift campaigning have a few methods to begin accepting donations: iframes, redirects, and welcome messages
iframe Donations
The first option for organizations is the use of an iframe. With an iframe, the donation ask can be included in the post-signature popups, which allows for a more seamless experience.

When using iframes, your organization will have two options: you can set up a global iframe rule (which allows you to automatically collect donations from all petitions that meet certain criteria) or you can set up a petition-level rule (which will only affect a single petition).
To set up a global iframe rule, go to the admin homepage > Settings > Post Action Flow > New Post Action Flow Rule. From here, choose under which conditions you want to show the iframe, and then choose the Share, IFRAME option. Now, enter the URL of your donation form. On this set up page we also include information about the variables we support. You can append these variables to the donation form URL to track where donations are coming from.
A few tips to keep in mind:
- The iframe will work best if you're displaying an embeddable version of your donation form, not a full donation page. This may require your technical team to optimize your current donation form for iframe.
- While you can include variables in the iframe URL, you'll need to ensure that your donation tool will support these variables. If there isn't a way for your donation tool to record the variable information that we're passing in the URL, then that information will be lost.
- We'd strongly recommend that organizations test the iframe on a single petition before adding it as a global rule.
To set up a petition-level admin rule, go to the petition > Admin > Settings > After Signing > Override default post-action settings > Share, IFRAME. From here, enter the URL of your donation form. On this page we also include information about the variables we support. You can append these variables to the donation form URL to track where donations are coming from (assuming that your donation tool can ingest and record that information).
Redirects
If you don't want to use the iframe option, ControlShift also supports post-action redirects. You can use this post-action redirect to send signers or attendees to an external site immediately following their action.
To set up a global redirect rule (which affects all petitions or events that meet your chosen conditions), go to the admin homepage > Settings > Post Action Flow > New Post Action Flow Rule. From here, choose under which conditions you want to redirect users to the donation page, and then choose the Share, Redirect (or just Redirect) option. Now, enter the URL of your donation page. On this set up page we also include information about the variables we support. You can append these variables to the donation page URL to track where donations are coming from.
A few tips to keep in mind:
- While you can include variables in the iframe URL, you'll need to ensure that your donation tool will support these variables. If there isn't a way for your donation tool to record the variable information that we're passing in the URL, then that information will be lost.
- Remember that a redirect option will mean that the user is sent off of your ControlShift site. You may want include an option to return to your ControlShift site after making a donation.
To set up a petition-level redirect rule, go to the petition > Admin > Settings > After Signing > Override default post-action settings > Share, Redirect (or just Redirect). From here, enter the URL of your donation page. On this page we also include information about the variables we support. You can append these variables to the donation page URL to track where donations are coming from (assuming that your donation tool can ingest and record that information).
Welcome Messages
A final option for supporting donations in ControlShift is to use the welcome modal. The welcome modal allows you to give more information about your organization and the work you're doing, while also prompting supporters to either create a petition, see other petitions, or make a donation. More information about the welcome modal.
Please note that you'll need to set a destination URL for the donate button. You can do so by going to the admin homepage > Settings > Options > Petitions > Destination URL for the "Make a donation" button in the welcome modal.
