Introduction
When creating a new Effort, it can be helpful to experience an Effort from a supporter's point of view. If you'd like, you can interact with a live Effort on our demo site or this article will take you through the screens that your members will see.
If you'd prefer to watch a video, click play.
Please keep in mind that depending on how you configure your new Effort, some of these screens may not be available for supporters interacting with the Effort. Nevertheless, there are three main ways a supporter might interact with the Effort: as a basic signer, as a recruited leader (of an admin-created, leaderless petition), or as a campaign creator (of a petition targeting a decision maker that they've chosen).
If you haven't already read our article explaining the difference between the Effort's landing and hub pages, it's recommended that you take a look at that article first, since we'll be referring to those different lookup pages in this article.
Please note: the Effort's landing page is not the same as the Landing Pages feature. The Landing Pages feature is separate, though similar, to Efforts, and Landing Pages also have their own landing and hub pages.
As a Signer
The most basic way that your supporters will interact with an Effort is by signing one (or more) of the petitions that are included in the Effort. Because Efforts are made up of individual petition campaigns, the signature process for a petition in the Effort is the same as for other petitions on your site. However, the process through which your supporters find the petition(s) they wish to sign is unique to Efforts.
Users who are interested in signing a petition in an Effort will either be sent directly to the appropriate petition page (via social sharing or targeted emails from the organization) or they'll be sent to one of the Effort's public lookup pages – either the Effort's landing page or the hub page.
Signing via the Effort's Landing Page

- After searching, they'll be shown their closest campaign and potentially some other campaigns nearby (which can be expanded to see more details. The user can then click the Sign the Petition button.
- Users are brought to the petition's signature page where they enter their information and sign the petition normally.
Signing via the Hub Page

As a recruited leader
When the Effort has admin-created, leaderless petitions, and the settings are configured to allow members to lead these petitions, then a user may be recruited to become a local leader.
These users will begin on the Effort's landing page.
Please note: To recruit local leaders, users MUST start from the Effort's landing page. Users sent to the Effort's hub page will not be able to enter the recruitment series.
This is the workflow for members recruited to lead a local campaign:
Summary:
- Users begin on the Effort's landing page, where they enter a search query.
- The closest petition is shown on the search results page. The text included on this page is customizable in the Effort's leadership settings. If they click the What will I need to do? link, they can view a quick summary of expectations. The user will then click the I'll be a leader button.
- The user is brought to the first page of the recruitment series, which thanks them for agreeing to be a leader. The text included on this page is customizable in the Effort's leadership settings. When they click to Commit as a Leader, they'll be associated with the petition/decision maker. If the user is not already logged into the platform, they'll be asked to log in or create an account.
- The user is then asked to review/edit the text of the campaign. (This is an optional step configured in the Leadership settings.) If admins have locked any petition fields, those fields will be grayed out and the user will be unable to make edits to those fields. After making any edits, they'll then click Save.
- The user will then see the training page. On this page, org admins can include requirements for campaign leaders, tips to be successful, means of getting in touch with org staff, etc. The user will then click I'm ready, let's go!
- The user will then be brought to the campaign's signature page. They're now listed as the campaign leader and have access to all of the campaign creator's tools.
As a campaign creator
Depending on the Effort's configuration, it may be possible for users to add their own decision makers to the Effort and create their own campaigns.
These users will begin on the Effort's landing page.
Please note: To create their own campaigns, users MUST start from the Effort's landing page. Users sent to the Effort's hub page will not, by default, be able to enter the recruitment/campaign creation series.
