When setting up an Effort, admins are able to customize various parts of the Effort. The Effort's Settings page allows admins to control many of the publicly visible parts of the Effort – including the way the public lookup pages behave and the way that signers interact with the individual petitions. The options included here do not include Settings tied to leadership – the way that supporters are recruited to create or run a petition in the Effort. For those Leadership settings, please go to the Effort's leadership tab.
To access the Effort's Settings page, go to the admin homepage > Efforts > name of the Effort > Settings.
Homepage Content
The settings in this section deal with basic Effort information, including how the Effort is (optionally) displayed on the site's homepage.
- Featured: If this toggle is set to yes, the Effort will be displayed on the platform's homepage. The Effort will take the first slot in the featured petitions section. Only the most recently featured Effort will be displayed on the homepage.
- Title: This is the title of the Effort. Note that updating the title of the Effort WILL NOT update the Effort's URL. The Effort's URL cannot be updated after the Effort is created.
- Description: The Effort's description is displayed on the Effort's hub page. When the Effort is featured on the homepage, the description will be displayed where a petition's 'why' text is normally shown.
- Add an Image: This image will be shown on the Effort's hub page. When the Effort is featured on the homepage, the image will be displayed where a petition's image is normally shown.
- Custom Goal of Petition Signatures: Like petitions, we normally increment the Effort signatures counter automatically. However, if you'd like to set a custom goal for this Effort, you can enter it here. When entered, this goal will be displayed on the Effort's hub and landing pages. When the Effort is featured on the homepage, this goal will be displayed where the petition's signature goal is normally shown.
When you've finished updating this section click Save. If your organization is operating in more than one language, click Needs translation to provide translations.
Theme
In this section admins can customize the Theme that's used with this Effort. The Themes tool allows admins to change the fonts, colors, logos, etc. that are used on various pages. Organization who are running an Effort as part of a separately-branded campaign (e.g. a campaign with its own microsite, logo, domain name, etc.) may find it useful to brand the Effort lookup and Effort petition pages to match that separate brand. Learn more about Themes.
Landing Page
The settings in this section deal with the Effort's landing page. The landing page (sometimes known as the map page) is where campaign creators generally get started.
From this page, users can search for local campaigns, agree to lead existing leaderless campaigns, and (potentially) create their own campaigns.
- Show map: when this toggle is set to yes, we'll show a map on the landing page. When this toggle is set to no, we'll only show the search box and sidebar.
- Only show launched petitions: when this toggle is set to yes, we'll only show fully launched, admin-approved petitions on the landing page map. This may be useful if you have a lot of targets and don't want them crowding the map. When this toggle is set to no, the map will show fully launched, admin-approved petitions and published decision makers that were left as targets.
- Search Strategy: the settings in this dropdown determine what petitions we show when someone enters a search query (usually their location).
- Closest - when this strategy is chosen, we'll just return the closest campaign. This is the most common search strategy for Efforts.
- Country - when this strategy is chosen, we'll show the correct country based on the search input regardless of if there's a closer campaign. So if a member searches for New York City, we'll return a United States campaign, and if a member searches for Adelaide, we'll return an Australian campaign, etc.
- Region/State - when this strategy is chosen, we'll return the correct region or state based on the search input regardless of if there's a closer campaign. So if a member searches for New York City, we'll return the New York State campaign and if a member searches for Adelaide, we'll return the South Australia campaign.
- Within Geographic Region - this strategy is only available when the Effort uses a decision maker collection that's tied to a geographic collection. When this strategy is chosen, we'll return the correct geographic shape for the search query. This can be used to ensure that members are sent to the correct congressional or parliamentary constituency based on their location.
- Keyword Search (not location based) - when this strategy is chosen, we'll search for keywords in the petitions' titles and text.
- Closest - when this strategy is chosen, we'll just return the closest campaign. This is the most common search strategy for Efforts.
- Distance Limit: If you're using the Closest search strategy, you can set a limit on the distance to search for campaigns. If there are no results within the search radius, the user will be told that there are no matching campaigns and may, depending on leadership settings, be asked to create a new campaign. When you've updated the distance limit, click Save.
- Landing Page Welcome Text: This text is displayed at the top of the landing page, above the search box. (See the image at the top of this section.) This section accepts HTML, so you can format the text in this section and include images, links, etc.
- How This Works: This text is displayed in the right sidebar of the landing page. (See the image at the top of this section.) You can use this section to provide campaign details, instructions, etc. This section accepts HTML.
- Label for 'Sign Petition' button in search results: When a user searches for their location, if there is a matching campaign, they'll see information about the matching campaign and can click to sign the petition. Changing the text here will override the default Sign Petition text.
To edit or reset any text to the default, click the pencil icon (). If your organization is operating in multiple languages, you can click the Needs translation link to provide or edit translations.
Hub Page
The settings in this section deal with the Effort's hub page.
The hub page lists the campaigns included in the Effort. From here users can search for their relevant campaign.
Note: users CANNOT enter the recruitment steps from the Effort's hub page. If you want your users to become leaders for leaderless campaigns, and/or if you want users to be able to create new campaigns, you must send them to the Effort's landing page.
- Show progress bar: This toggle determines whether we show the Effort's signature progress bar on the Effort's hub page. By default, we show the progress bar, but if you don't want to include signature totals on the hub page, you can turn it off here.
- Default sort order for petitions: this dropdown determines the sort order that we use to display the admin-approved petitions on the hub page.
- Created At: This is the default sort order. When this option is chosen, the most recently created petitions will be displayed first.
- Signature Count: When this option is chosen, the petitions with the highest signature counts will be displayed first.
- Created At: This is the default sort order. When this option is chosen, the most recently created petitions will be displayed first.
Petition Page
The Petition pages link back to setting allows you to choose the destination of the Effort link that we show on the petition (opposite the campaign creator information). Depending on your preference, users who click the link can be sent to the hub page (which lists the petitions in the Effort) or the landing page (which includes a map of the campaigns and allows the user to become the leader of a petition in the Effort). If you don't want any link to be shown on the petition page, choose the nowhere option.
Petition Emails
From this section you can override the emails that are sent to users.
- When someone signs a campaign in the Effort, the email they're sent is made up of two messages: the thanks for signing petition email, followed by the thank signer forward to friends email.
Tip: One popular update is to include a link to the Effort's landing page (or hub page) in the thank signer forward to friends email. This update allows potential signers to find their closest campaign, even if it's different than the campaign that their friend signed.
- When someone clicks the share by email buttons on the petition page, they're shown a message template. This is the share by email body text.
- If you choose to send messages to the decision makers listed for petitions in an Effort, you can override the text using the Initial email to decision maker: subject header and Initial email to decision maker: body text boxes.
Delete
If you'd like to delete the Effort, you can do that from here. This will delete all petitions and all signatures included in the Effort. You'll need to enter the Effort's slug to delete the Effort.
Warning: Deleting an Effort is final and CANNOT be undone. Please be sure that you want to fully delete the Effort, all of its petitions, and all of the signatures before proceeding
Next we'll look at leadership settings.
