ControlShift's partnerships feature allows your organization to partner with like-minded groups to work together on campaigns.
To create a new partnership, choose Partnerships in the administrative tools and click New Partnership. The Title and Description are public facing and will appear on the partnership's hub page, which displays all of the petitions that have been created under the partnership.
Click Save and the partnership will be created. Once created, you can begin adding petitions to the partnership and inviting partner admins. You can also click the Edit button to choose additional settings for the partnership.
Disclaimers and List Sharing
Admins can decide how they want to share signatures with each partner organization. As a ControlShift admin, you can choose to configure the partnership so that all data is shared with the partner, only users who opt-in are shared with the partner, or only users who haven't opted out are shared with the partner. When deciding what rules you want to use for sharing data with the partner, we encourage organizations to think about how trustworthy the partner organization is in terms of using a member's data, consider any privacy rules you are subject to, and seek legal advice if necessary.
To update a partnership's signature sharing settings, go to the admin homepage > Partnerships > name of the partner > Edit > Settings.
If you want to share all signatures with the partner organization, then we suggest that you include a Signature Disclaimer to explain that by signing the partner's petition (or RSVPing to their event) the user's data will be shared with the partner. This disclaimer will be shown below the sign/RSVP button and will replace any existing disclaimer that your organization shows by default on petition/event pages.
If you want to allow users to opt-out of the partner's mailing list, you can configure either a pre-checked checkbox (opt-out checkbox) or an unchecked checkbox (opt-in checkbox). To do so, check the Display Opt-In option in the partnership's Settings. Once checked, you can add the opt-in's label text, which will be shown to users. The Default value for Opt-In allows to choose whether the checkbox should be pre-checked or unchecked. (If you're using an opt-in/opt-out checkbox, you may be interested in partner's promoted petition feature.) Please note, unlike the disclaimer setting, using an opt-in checkbox will not affect any other checkboxes your organization may be using. This means that if your organization is using an email communications opt-in/opt-out, the signature/RSVP form will have two boxes: one to opt into your organization's mailing list and another to opt into the partner's list.
Regardless of what opt-in type you choose, we strongly recommend informing users that their information is being shared with a partner organization.
The PDF signature disclaimer is used when the petition creator of a partner-associated petition collects signatures offline. If you do not enter a specific disclaimer for this partnership, we will use the default, global partner petition pdf disclaimer (set in Content > Petitions >Default PDF signature disclaimer for partnerships).
You can also decide whether or not to allow the partner organization to download signer information. By default, partner organization administrators can export the signers who have opted into their mailing list from the partner's manage page.
However, if you want to prevent the partner organization from downloading the list of signers, you can do so by unchecking the box labeled Allow petition creator to download petition signers. This will not only remove the export option from the partnership's manage page, but it will also remove the signature CSV export option from the petition creator tools. This will only affect petitions that are included in the partnership.
Additional Partnership Settings
The settings below are available during the partnership creation process and can also be accessed by going to the partnership's admin page and clicking Edit.
With the partnerships feature, you can also designate a different Blast Email From Address and Blast Email From Name that will be used when a partner admin drafts an email to all of their signers from the partner's manage page.
By default, we display a new campaign button on the partnership's hub page. If you want to remove that button and limit the petitions created under a partnership, check the Hide start new petition button checkbox. Keep in mind that while the new campaign button is included on the partnership's hub page, anyone – not just partner and CSL org admins – can create a petition under the partnership. (If you need to remove a campaign from a partnership, that's possible via the partnership's admin tools.)
Even when the new campaign button is removed from the hub page, the button will still be available in the partner's manage page and people with a direct URL (which is the URL of the partnership's hub page /petitions/new) will still be able to start a petition under that partnership.
Petitions that are associated with a partnership will include the partner's name on petition signature and event pages. On these pages, the partner's name will be displayed as a link that directs people to the partner's hub page. The Display image on petitions and events setting allows you to change this behavior – instead of displaying the name of the partnership, we'll show the image that you've chosen for them (usually a logo). This image will also be linked and will also direct people to the partner's hub page.
Finally, you can override the emails that are sent to users when they sign petitions in the partnership.
After saving this information, you'll be brought to the partnership’s admin page. This page is also accessible by choosing Partnerships from the admin homepage and clicking the name of the partnership.
From here, you can click to view the partnership’s hub page, edit the partnership’s settings and content, create partnership calendars, or move existing petitions and events into the partnership.
Inviting Partner Admins
Additionally, from this page you can invite partner staff members who will have admin privileges over the partnership. To invite partner staff members to the platform, click Admin, enter their email address, and click Send Invitation.
Partner's Manage Page
Partner admins who are not members of your organization, but are staff of the partner organization, will only have privileges over the petitions and events that are included in the partnership. As such, they have a different administrative page, known as the partner's manage page. From the partner's manage page, these partner admins can view all of the petitions, events, and calendars that have been created under the partnership, create blast emails, export signer information, and view signature and petition counts. To preview the partner's manage page, go to the partnership's admin or hub pages and click Manage.
Partner Admin Privileges
Partner admins are also able to view and use the petition creators' tools for petitions included in their partnership. This means that they are able to send email updates to the signers of a specific petition and download the petition delivery pdf for individual petitions. However, all emails – including those drafted from the partner's manage page and from the petition's 'email supporters' page – need to be approved by admins from your organization.
Partner Hub Page
By clicking View from the partner's manage page or the partnership's admin page, you'll be directed to the partnership’s hub page.
This hub page is a dedicated page for the partnership. In addition to including information about the partner organization, it also includes the petitions that are included in the partnership (depending on moderation).
If the new campaign button is enabled, then from the hub page, anyone – administrators from both organizations and the public – can create a new campaign that will be included in the partnership. However, in order for a petition to appear on the hub page, org admins must mark the petition as good or above.
Partner and org admins can also create new partnership-associated petitions using the new campaign button in the partner's manage page and/or the partnership's admin page. The can also use the direct URL for the partnership's new campaigns page (which is the URL of the partnership's hub page /petitions/new).
Adding and Removing Petitions
If a petition was created under a partnership and you don't want it to be included in the partnership, it is possible to remove it. To do so, go to the petition's Admin page. The petition's partnership relationship (as well as its inclusion in a Landing Page or Effort) is included in the Associations section of the Details tab.
Click the x button next to the partnership name to remove it from the partnership.
You can add an existing petition to a partnership from the petition's admin page or the partnership's admin page.
From the petition's admin page, go to the Associations section of the Details tab. Here, click the + sign in the Partnership box to add the petition to a partnership. This will open a modal asking you to complete the URL of the partnership's hub page.
Alternatively, from the partnership's admin page, click the Petitions button. On this page, there's a list of all the petitions included in the partnership. Click Move Petition into Partnership, and complete the URL of the petition.
Campaign creators who are running a petition that's part of a partnership are still able to collect signature offline. When generating the offline signature pdf, we automatically include a partner petition disclaimer that informs offline signers that their information will be used by the partner admin. When offline signatures are entered through this modal, the signatures will be automatically added to the partner's mailing list and will be included in the signer export.
We've also implemented a feature for organizations that want their partners to be able to export signers, but who don't want to give away segments of their list when sending a blast email. With the new feature, there are two versions of the same petition, one which includes the checkbox to join the partner's mailing list and one which does not.
You can see this in action with the following two links. The first link (https://demo.controlshiftlabs.com/petitions/release-pro-democracy-youth-activists-in-azerbaijan) is the default URL for the petition and includes the checkbox to join our test partner's mailing list.
The second link, (https://demo.controlshiftlabs.com/petitions/promoted/release-pro-democracy-youth-activists-in-azerbaijan) which could be used in a blast email or a twitter message, etc., removes the opt-in box — keeping your list in your hands. To direct signers to a page without an opt-in box, just add "promoted/" to the petition's URL between "petitions/" and the petition slug (in this case, "release-pro-democracy-youth-activists-in-azerbaijan").
